Owasso Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious condition in which the flow of oxygen is intermittently stopped during sleep. This stop-and-go pattern leads to an oxygen deficiency which can have long-term negative effects on your overall health.
If you have sleep apnea, then it is vital that you seek treatment for it. Dr. Heng Lim is a dentist in Owasso who provides treatments for obstructive sleep apnea and snoring.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is generally classified into one of two categories: central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea.
Central sleep apnea (CSA) is the kind that happens because of a miscommunication between the brain and the muscles that control breathing. A person with CSA may suddenly stop breathing during their sleep for up to a minute (sometimes even longer) at a time.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is when tissues in the throat relax and collapse in one another. This creates a physical obstruction that prevents air from getting through. When the person with OSA tries to breathe in their sleep, they must force air through their passageways, and this creates a vibration which we recognize as snoring. So if you snore, there is a possibility that you could have OSA.
Treatments for Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea
If you have already tried seeking treatment for OSA, then you likely realize that treating it is not always easy. Many patients are disappointed by one treatment after another and struggle to find relief for their snoring and sleep apnea.
Radical approaches like surgery can be needlessly invasive, traditional treatments like CPAP can be uncomfortable and inconvenient, and various sleep apnea oral appliances can cause TMJ problems.
Dr. Lim takes a holistic approach to treating obstructive sleep apnea in order to provide tailored and effective solutions. He focuses on treating the underlying structural causes of OSA at varying levels, according to each patient’s need.
Here are the four primary treatments Dr. Lim offers here at Elite Dental Group:
- Non-invasive NightLase laser treatment
- Mandibular advancement devices
- Full-mouth restoration
- Facial orthopedics
Using gentle laser energy, Dr. Lim will tone and tighten loose tissues inside your throat and soft palate. This treatment has a gradual effect, however. The laser stimulates the production of collagen in the tissues, and it takes time for this collagen to grow, so you will probably need multiple treatments before you experience the results. This treatment is non-invasive and all-natural, however, and it does not require surgery or wearing an oral appliance.
Mandibular Advancement Device
An oral appliance is an effective method of treating OSA because it’s less cumbersome than wearing a CPAP mask. This appliance rests between your teeth and props your jaw open so that it doesn’t collapse towards the back of your throat. The most effective appliances are ones that are custom-fitted by a dental professional who knows how to comfortably position your jaw without causing TMJ pain.
Teeth in themselves are not responsible for blocking the flow of oxygen in your airway. But if extensive dental damage has resulted in an uneven bite, then this could cause your jaw to collapse into a position that closes off your throat when you lie down.
Dr. Lim has learned that snoring and sleep apnea are commonly caused by an underdeveloped maxilla. In some cases, Dr. Lim will aim to prevent obstructive sleep apnea through the use of orthopedic facial appliances that encourage forward growth in the maxilla. This will open up space in the throat, as well as create a more balanced profile.
